Is a food hygiene certificate the same as a food handler certificate?
In everyday use, yes. "Food hygiene certificate", "food handling certificate" and "food handler certificate" all refer to the same idea in Australia: proof that you've completed training in the basics of safe food handling — hygiene, cross-contamination, temperature control, cleaning, allergens and safe storage.
The phrase "food hygiene certificate" is more common in the UK, where entry-level food safety training is often labelled that way. In Australia the usual terms are food handler or food handling certificate, but they describe the same fundamentals, so if a job ad or an employer uses either phrase, they're generally after the same thing.
Do you need a food hygiene certificate in Australia?
Under the national Food Standards Code, Australian food businesses must make sure anyone handling food has the skills and knowledge needed for their role. There's no single law forcing every worker to hold a certificate, but many businesses meet that obligation by having staff complete food handler training, and many job seekers do it before applying so their resume already shows they understand the basics.
Separately, some states require a food business to nominate a certified Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) — a distinct, legally recognised role earned through an approved RTO. A food hygiene or food handler certificate of completion is not the same as an FSS certificate, so if your role specifically requires an FSS, that's a separate credential to obtain.
