Why it matters for cafés
Cafés are food businesses, and under the national Food Standards Code you're expected to make sure everyone handling food has the skills and knowledge to do it safely. With staff moving between coffee, cabinet food, brunch service and cleaning all shift, a consistent baseline of food-safety knowledge protects your customers and your reputation. Having your team complete food handler training is a simple way to demonstrate you take that obligation seriously — useful for induction, for showing an inspector your staff are trained, and for peace of mind on a busy weekend.
- Train new hires during onboarding
- No classroom or booked session — done online
- Only pay for certificates staff actually pass
- Verifiable IDs you can keep on file
- Consistent baseline across the whole team
- Ready the same day for a new starter

Cafés food handler FAQs
Is this the same as a Food Safety Supervisor certificate?
No — and it's important to be clear about the difference. A Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) is a separate, legally recognised role that some states require a café to have nominated and certified through an approved RTO. Our course is a private Food Handler Certificate of completion for individual staff — it shows they understand safe food handling, but it does not replace an FSS certificate or an RTO qualification. Many cafés use our training to give their whole team a food-safety baseline and still appoint a properly certified FSS where their state requires one.
How does it work for a whole team?
Each staff member completes the training and test individually on their own device — there's no group booking to organise. The training and the test are free, so your team can work through everything at no cost; you (or they) only pay AUD $29.99 per person who passes and wants the certificate issued. Every certificate has a unique verification ID, so you can keep a copy on file for each employee as proof they've completed food handler training.
How long does it take a café worker?
Most people finish the reading and the test in under an hour, and it's self-paced, so staff can do it during a quiet shift, an induction session or at home. That makes it easy to get a new barista or counter hand trained before their first proper shift rather than waiting for the next scheduled class.
What does the training cover?
It covers the Australian food-safety essentials relevant to café work: personal hygiene and handwashing, keeping cold-display and cooked food at safe temperatures, avoiding cross-contamination, cleaning and sanitising, handling allergens, and safe storage and serving. It's general food handler training rather than café-specific, but it maps directly onto the counter, the cabinet and brunch service.
