Why it matters for catering businesses

Catering is a food business with extra risk built in: food is prepared in one place, transported, then held hot or cold before it's served somewhere else — and every step is a chance for food to reach an unsafe temperature or get contaminated. The national Food Standards Code expects everyone handling that food to understand how to keep it safe. When you bring on casuals fast for an event, having them complete food handler training gives you confidence they know safe holding, transport and hygienic serving before they're on the floor.

  • Onboard event casuals quickly
  • Give a changing crew a shared baseline
  • No class to schedule around bookings
  • Only pay per person who passes
  • Verifiable certificates for your records
  • Focus on safe holding and transport

Questions

Catering Businesses food handler FAQs

Does this cover our Food Safety Supervisor obligation?

No. A Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) is a separate, legally recognised role that many states require a catering business to nominate and certify through an approved RTO. Our course is a private Food Handler Certificate of completion for individual staff — it shows they understand safe food handling, but it does not replace an FSS certificate or RTO qualification. Caterers commonly use our training to give event casuals a food-safety baseline while appointing a certified FSS where their state requires one.

Can I train a lot of casuals at once?

Yes — each person completes the training and test individually on their own device, so there's no group session to organise and no cap on numbers. The training and test are free, and you only pay AUD $29.99 per person who passes and wants their certificate. Each certificate has a unique verification ID, so you can keep proof of training for every casual on your books.

Why is food safety extra important in catering?

Because catering breaks the usual 'cook and serve in one place' pattern. Food is prepped centrally, packed, transported and then held before serving, so understanding safe holding times and temperatures genuinely matters. Training covers exactly these points, which is reassuring when you're putting new casuals on a function.

How long does it take?

Most people finish the reading and test in under an hour, and it's self-paced — so casuals can complete it before an event rather than waiting for a scheduled class. A new hire can realistically be trained the same day they're booked.
