Who counts as a food handler in South Australia

A food handler in South Australia is anyone working with food or with food-contact surfaces — Adelaide CBD laneway kitchens, Central Market stallholders, Glenelg beachfront cafés, Barossa and McLaren Vale cellar doors serving platters alongside tastings, and the crews who cater the state's festival season. Wine-region hospitality catches a lot of people who think of themselves as front-of-house but are handling food all shift.

SA Health oversees food safety with local councils. As in most of the country, the legal duty rests on the business to ensure its food handlers have appropriate skills and knowledge — there is no personal licence you are required to carry.

What Standard 3.2.2A means for South Australian food businesses

Standard 3.2.2A applies nationally from 8 December 2023 and reaches South Australian businesses handling unpackaged, potentially hazardous, ready-to-eat food. Category One covers food service and catering and requires three tools — a trained Food Safety Supervisor, food handler training, and substantiation that key controls are happening. Category Two covers certain retailers and requires the first two.

For SA that is a notable shift, because the state has not run its own statewide supervisor licence. Festival caterers and cellar-door kitchens serving prepared food are the kind of operation most likely to sit in Category One. The food handler training element concerns specified food-safety matters rather than a named accredited course; our training covers that material and our certificate records that you completed it.

Food safety certificates in SA: supervisor versus food handler

South Australia has not historically operated a single statewide food safety supervisor licence, so what a business needs has depended on SA Health, the local council and the nature of the operation. That makes the supervisor-versus-handler distinction less visible here than in NSW or Victoria — but it still exists, and our certificate sits firmly on the food handler side.

If an Adelaide employer asks for a food safety certificate, they are almost certainly asking whether you understand hygiene, cross-contamination, temperature control, cleaning and allergens. If they ask for a formal supervisor qualification or accredited units, that comes from a registered training organisation, not from us.

How a South Australian employer checks your certificate

Each certificate has a unique ID that verifies free on our site, with no login. For a Barossa cellar door or an Adelaide Fringe caterer taking on short-term staff, being able to confirm training immediately is far more useful than a document they have no way to check.

South Australian hospitality spikes hard around Fringe, the Festival and vintage. Having a verifiable certificate ready before those windows open is worth more than getting one halfway through them.
