Do school canteen staff need a food handler certificate?

There's no single national law requiring every school canteen worker or volunteer in Australia to hold a food handler certificate, but school canteens are food businesses serving children — a more vulnerable group — so schools, P&C committees and state canteen associations hold food safety to a high standard, and many have their own training expectations. Our course is a private Food Handler Certificate of completion — not a government-issued certificate and not the Food Safety Supervisor certificate — but it's a practical way to show a canteen manager or school you understand hygiene, allergy management and safe temperatures. It's always worth checking what your school or state canteen association asks for — and arriving with food-safety training already done makes a great first impression.

It covers the food-safety essentials a school canteen relies on: personal hygiene and handwashing, managing food allergens carefully — vital in nut-aware schools — keeping hot food hot and cold food cold through recess and lunch rushes, avoiding cross-contamination, wrapping, labelling and storing food safely, and cleaning and sanitising. It's general Australian food handling training, so your school or state canteen association may add their own menu and procedure requirements on top, but this gives you the foundation those procedures build on.

You read the free training, sit a free multiple-choice test (pass mark 75%, free retakes), and once you pass and pay AUD $29.99 your certificate is emailed to you instantly with a unique ID the school or canteen manager can verify online. If the canteen coordinator has asked you to help out this week, you can have your certificate ready the same day.
