Why it matters for restaurants

A restaurant is a food business, and the national Food Standards Code expects you to make sure everyone who handles food has the skills and knowledge to do it safely — from the person plating on the line to the one carrying it to the table. A consistent baseline of food handler training across the team reduces the risk of a hygiene or temperature mistake, supports your induction process, and helps show an inspector or auditor that your staff understand the fundamentals.

Questions

Restaurants food handler FAQs

Does this replace a Food Safety Supervisor certificate?

No. A Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) is a separate, legally recognised role that many states require a restaurant to nominate and have certified through an approved RTO. Our course is a private Food Handler Certificate of completion for individual staff — it demonstrates they understand safe food handling, but it does not replace an FSS certificate or an RTO qualification. Restaurants commonly use our training to give the whole team a food-safety baseline while still appointing a certified FSS where their state requires one.

Can I get all my staff certified?

Yes — each person completes the training and test individually on their own device, so there's nothing to book. The training and test are free, and you only pay AUD $29.99 per staff member who passes and wants their certificate. Each certificate carries a unique verification ID you can keep on file as proof the employee has completed food handler training.

How long does it take?

Most staff finish the reading and the multiple-choice test in under an hour. Because it's online and self-paced, they can complete it during induction, a quiet period or at home — so a new kitchen hand or waiter can be trained before their first shift rather than waiting for a scheduled course.

What topics are covered?

The training covers the food-safety fundamentals every restaurant relies on: personal hygiene and handwashing, cooking, cooling and reheating to safe temperatures, hot and cold holding, avoiding cross-contamination, cleaning and sanitising, allergen handling, and safe storage. It's general Australian food handling training that underpins your kitchen's food-safety program.
