Who we are
Food Handler Academy is a small Australian business, registered with an ABN, that runs this website. We publish 17 free food safety training modules and a free online test. Anyone can read the training and sit the test without paying or signing up. People who pass can choose to buy a certificate of completion for AUD $29.99, which is emailed straight away with a unique ID an employer can check.
Why we built it
Australian food businesses have to make sure the people handling food have the skills and knowledge to do it safely, and employers often ask applicants to show it. For a first café job, a kitchen hand shift or a volunteer canteen roster, a paid accredited course is usually more than the role calls for. We wanted a way to learn the essentials and prove it that costs nothing to try and only costs anything once you have passed.
How the training and guides are written and checked
Everything we teach comes from the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, mainly Standard 3.2.2 (Food Safety Practices and General Requirements) and Standard 3.2.2A (Food Safety Management Tools), and from guidance published by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and the state and territory food regulators.
Our guides and test answers list the official pages they rely on under “Sources”, and show the date they were last updated. The regulator links and the facts we cite were last checked on . When a regulator changes a rule or moves a page, we update the copy and its date. If you spot something out of date, please tell us.
What the certificate is
Our certificate is a private certificate of completion: it shows you finished our food handler training and passed the test. If a role asks for a Food Safety Supervisor certificate or an accredited course, our FAQ explains the difference. Every certificate has a unique ID that anyone can check on our verification page.
